Undergraduate Student - Lipedema Lipidomics

My name is Ayesha Siddiqua, and I am an undergraduate student at New York University, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Chemistry. I also hold an Associate's degree from Bard College. In the lab, I am currently involved in a Lipedema research project in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic and contribute to the development of protocols for macrophage staining.

Education

  • Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Minor in Chemistry - New York University
  • Associate's Degree - Bard College

Work Experience Beyond research, I work as an EMT, providing emergency medical care through 911 calls, and as a medical scribe, documenting patient encounters in the emergency room.

Pedro Colon

Medical Student

I am originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico. My background is I studied Chemistry and Biology at MIT for my undergrad until 2023 where I worked in a cancer metabolism lab. For the summer I worked on the TRIO study where we saw the effects of early time restricted eating on various lipids in plasma.

Emilie Dávila

Medical Student

My name is Emilie Dávila, and I am from Dorado, Puerto Rico. I obtained a Bachelors in Neuroscience at The University of Pennsylvania in 2022. Following undergrad, I completed a gap year at Memorial Sloan Kettering working as a Community Outreach Coordinator in the Immigrant Health and Cancer Disparities Service. Currently, I am a second year medical student at The University of Puerto Rico.

I am working at the Alemán Lab through the MSTAR Program, which focuses on aging research. My project this summer is focused on comparing the lipidomic profiles of younger versus older patients in relation to their diabetes diagnosis.

Originally from India, I moved to US to pursue my medical education. I completed a three-year residency in Internal Medicine at Jacobi Medical Center and then an academically oriented fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center. At Einstein, I realized that my research interests lay in diabetes physiology, and began a series of metabolic physiology studies (“clamp” studies) in humans to examine mechanisms of insulin resistance via in-vivo tracer kinetics studies and adipose tissue dysfunction. My current work relates to the impact of Vitamin D repletion and resveratrol administration on insulin sensitivity and adipose tissue inflammation in obese, insulin-resistant individuals.

I joined the Division of Endocrinology at NYU Langone Medical Center in November 2016 and have setup Diabetes Biobank as part of the Center for Metabolic Health. This will allow us to have better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of diabetes, enable identification of individuals at highest risk, lead to risk stratification, and development of more targeted preventive measures. Clinically, I am also working to build a Type 1 diabetes clinic at the NYULMC and examine the pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes, its complications and hypoglycemia unawareness.
